What does Romans 15:5 mean?
Paul is asking God to give the Roman church the strength to think and feel alike, united in the spirit of Jesus. He calls God the source of both perseverance (the ability to keep going through difficulty) and encouragement (the comfort that lifts us up), because unity among believers isn't something we can manufacture on our own, especially when we're tired or discouraged. The phrase "according to Christ Jesus" is key, meaning this unity isn't about everyone agreeing on every detail, but about sharing the same heart and values that Jesus modeled, centered on love and service. When we're struggling to get along with others in our faith community, Paul reminds us that asking God for this kind of harmony is itself a powerful prayer, and it starts with the God who already knows what we need to keep going.
