Romans 11:3
““Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have broken down your altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.””
What does Romans 11:3 mean?
Elijah speaks these words to God in a moment of deep despair, convinced that he's the last faithful person left in Israel and that his enemies are closing in. He's reminding God of how the nation has systematically rejected and killed God's messengers and torn down places of worship, and he feels utterly abandoned in his mission. Paul quotes this moment in Romans to show how even the greatest biblical figures experienced overwhelming loneliness and fear, wondering if God had abandoned his purposes entirely. Yet the beautiful surprise that follows (which God reveals to Elijah) is that he was never actually alone—God had preserved thousands of faithful people Elijah didn't know about.
