Romans 11:22
“See then the goodness and severity of God. Toward those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness; otherwise you also will be cut off.”
What does Romans 11:22 mean?
Paul is painting a picture of God's character as having two real sides, both of which matter. God shows kindness to those who trust and follow him, but he also exercises judgment against those who turn away, and he takes both seriously. The "severity" Paul mentions refers to what happened when many Jewish people rejected Jesus, and it's meant as a wake-up call to gentile believers who might otherwise get complacent. Paul is essentially saying: don't assume God's grace is unconditional or endless, or that you can ignore him and face no consequences. At the same time, he's reminding you that right now, you're experiencing his goodness and mercy. The condition is real but it's also hopeful, because it simply means "keep trusting him, keep walking with him." This balance can be hard for us to hold. We live in grace, which is free and unearned, yet that grace calls us toward a genuine relationship and genuine faithfulness. It's not about earning your way to heaven through perfect behavior, but rather recognizing that God's kindness should lead us toward deeper devotion to him, not away from it.
