What does Romans 1:30 mean?
Paul is listing the kinds of attitudes and behaviors that grow in a human heart when it turns away from God. Being a backbiter means talking badly about people behind their backs, and Paul groups it with haughtiness and boastfulness, showing how these spring from the same root of selfishness and disconnection from God's character. What's striking here is that Paul doesn't separate "big" sins from "small" ones. Backbiting and boasting sit right alongside disobedience to parents and inventing new ways to do harm. For Paul, they're all symptoms of the same problem: a life organized around ourselves instead of around God and others. If you recognize any of these tendencies in yourself, that's actually the Holy Spirit's kindness at work, inviting you back toward what's true and good.
