Revelation 3:18
βI counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.β
What does Revelation 3:18 mean?
Jesus is speaking to a church that thinks it has everything figured out, but he sees spiritual poverty underneath their material success. The "gold refined by fire" means faith that's been tested and strengthened through hardship, rather than the brittle confidence that comes from earthly wealth alone. The "white garments" represent a transformed character and life, covering the shame of spiritual failure that they're currently ignoring. The "eye salve" invites them to see clearly again, to recognize their actual condition and their desperate need for God's healing. Jesus isn't rejecting them, though, he's offering them what they really lack: genuine spiritual wealth instead of the hollow kind. It's a loving wake-up call wrapped in an invitation to buy these things from him, meaning to humbly receive what he's offering.
