What does Revelation 3:16 mean?
Jesus uses strikingly harsh language here to describe what happens when faith becomes half-hearted and uncommitted. Being "lukewarm" means going through the motions without genuine passion or conviction, neither fully turned toward God nor honestly turning away. The image of being spat out is meant to sting, to wake people up to how deeply unappealing spiritual indifference is to God, who values honest commitment over comfortable compromise. This comes in a letter to the church at Laodicea, a wealthy city where material comfort may have made people spiritually complacent. Jesus isn't saying he'll reject people for struggling or doubting, but rather that pretending to follow while keeping him at arm's length misses the entire point of faith. He invites them back to genuine devotion, calling them to either embrace their faith wholeheartedly or be honest about where they actually stand.
