What does Revelation 22:16 mean?
Jesus identifies himself here using three powerful images that together paint a picture of his identity and purpose. "Root and offspring of David" means he is both the source from which King David's line came and the promised descendant who fulfills all of God's covenant promises to that royal family, bridging past and future. When he calls himself the "Bright and Morning Star," he's claiming to be the light that announces a new day, the herald of hope that appears just before dawn breaks, offering guidance and beauty to those watching in darkness. The whole statement comes at the very end of Revelation as Jesus sends his final message to the churches, reminding them that he is both rooted in God's ancient promises and is actively present as their guide in the present moment.
