What does Revelation 21:19 mean?
John describes the New Jerusalem with overwhelming beauty, and these precious stones aren't chosen randomly. Each gemstone was deeply familiar to ancient readers: jasper was common and sturdy, sapphire represented royalty and heaven itself, and emeralds and chalcedony were prized for their color and rarity. By listing them as the very foundation of God's city, John tells us that what we consider most valuable and beautiful in this world is merely the ground-level support for what God is building. The point isn't to get lost cataloging gems, but to understand that in God's renewal of all things, beauty isn't an afterthought or luxury. It matters deeply. If you've felt that your love of beauty or color or joy is somehow unspiritual, this vision contradicts that completely. The foundations themselves, the bedrock, are resplendent.
