What does Revelation 21:18 mean?
This description of the heavenly city uses precious materials to convey something almost impossible to imagine: absolute beauty, value, and transparency combined. In John's vision, the wall is made of jasper (a stone that catches and reflects light brilliantly), while the city itself is gold so pure it becomes like glass, suggesting something both solid and luminous, refined yet open. The piling of one precious image on top of another isn't meant to describe an actual blueprint, but rather to communicate that in God's presence, everything that's broken and tarnished in our current experience gets transformed into something radiant and whole. The transparency of glass mixed with the richness of gold hints at a place where nothing is hidden and everything is valuable, where God's character and glory are both visible and woven through every part of existence.
