Revelation 2:5
“Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I am coming to you swiftly, and will move your lamp stand out of its place, unless you repent.”
What does Revelation 2:5 mean?
Jesus is speaking to the church in Ephesus, reminding them that they've drifted from their early passion and devotion to him. He's not being harsh for the sake of it, but calling them back to the love and actions that first defined them, like a friend reminding you of who you truly want to be. The warning about moving their lampstand is serious: a lampstand represents a church's witness and influence in the world. When we lose our genuine connection to Jesus and stop living out what we claim to believe, we lose our ability to shine his light effectively. What makes this verse hopeful, though, is that repentance (turning back around) is always an option. Jesus isn't saying this is inevitable, but rather that it's the consequence if they refuse to change course. Many of us go through seasons where we've lost something precious in our faith, and this verse gently invites us to remember what we loved, to return to it, and to let our actions reflect that return.
