Revelation 2:23

I will kill her children with Death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

What does Revelation 2:23 mean?

This stark warning comes from Jesus to the church in Thyatira, responding to their tolerance of a false teacher who was leading believers into sexual immorality and idolatry. The "children" refers to those who have genuinely adopted her teachings and lifestyle, not innocent victims, and "death" likely means spiritual death or separation from God's protection and blessing. The deeper message cuts through the darkness: Jesus sees what's hidden in our hearts and minds. He doesn't judge by outward appearances or by what we hide from others. This isn't meant to terrify those honestly seeking Him, but rather to warn that we can't fool the One who truly knows us. The promise that each person receives according to their deeds is actually meant as encouragement too, because it means our genuine faith, repentance, and love for God matter and are noticed by Him, even when no one else sees them.
