What does Revelation 2:11 mean?

This is Jesus speaking directly to the church in Smyrna, a community facing real persecution. The "second death" refers to final separation from God, the ultimate consequence that comes after physical death for those who reject him. The promise here is radical comfort: if you remain faithful through suffering, that final death has no power over you. The repeated phrase "he who has an ear" is an invitation to really listen, not just hear. It suggests that some people hear these words but don't let them sink in, while others grasp their urgency. Jesus is saying that faithfulness now—even through trials—is directly connected to eternal security. For anyone suffering or afraid, this promises that your present struggle doesn't determine your eternal destiny; your allegiance to Christ does.
