“Don’t be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
What does Revelation 2:10 mean?
Jesus speaks these words to the church at Smyrna, a community facing real persecution for their faith. He doesn't minimize what's coming, but he reframes it: these hardships aren't meaningless suffering, but a test that reveals and strengthens genuine faith. The "ten days" likely represents a complete but limited period of trouble, not endless torment. What makes this message powerful is that Jesus offers something beyond mere survival. He promises that faithfulness through difficulty leads to "the crown of life," a restored relationship with him that death itself cannot take away. For people in any season of pain or pressure, this suggests that our worth isn't determined by comfort or safety, but by whether we remain connected to God through whatever comes.
