Psalms 88:12
“Are your wonders made known in the dark? Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?”
What does Psalms 88:12 mean?
The psalmist here is wrestling with deep isolation and asking God a hard question: if you're hidden away in darkness and suffering, does God's goodness even reach you there, or does it only work in the bright, remembered places of life? It's a raw expression of how abandoned pain can feel, as if God's power and justice belong only to those whose circumstances allow them to see and celebrate it. Rather than claiming false comfort, the psalm gives voice to the honest confusion of someone at the bottom, wondering if they've fallen outside the reach of God's care. That recognition itself, oddly, can be comforting to anyone who feels similarly forgotten.
