Psalms 80:5
“You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure.”
What does Psalms 80:5 mean?
The psalmist is describing a time of deep national suffering, when God's people have experienced so much sorrow that it feels like their entire sustenance has become grief itself. Rather than bread and water that nourish and satisfy, they're consuming only pain, day after day, in overwhelming amounts. This isn't saying God is punishing them cruelly, but rather expressing how thoroughly their crisis has consumed their lives. When you're going through extended hardship, tears become your constant companion, your everyday reality, your inescapable truth. The psalmist is naming something many of us know: that some seasons feel so heavy that sadness stops being an emotion and becomes the actual texture of survival itself. Speaking this reality aloud to God (rather than pretending it isn't happening) was how the psalmist began to move toward healing and hope.
