What does Psalms 79:12 mean?
When the psalmist asks God to repay their neighbors "seven times" for their insults and mockery, he's crying out in the language of lament, not asking for measured justice. This comes from a time when Israel felt surrounded by hostile nations who mocked both them and their faith in God. The number seven is biblical shorthand for completeness or fullness, so the plea essentially means: "Let their contempt come back on them completely; don't let their insults against you go unnoticed." What makes this prayer honest is that it names real pain. The psalmist and his community are hurting from shame and ridicule, and he's bringing that wound directly to God rather than pretending it doesn't matter. At the same time, the prayer leaves the response in God's hands instead of taking revenge himself.
