What does Psalms 74:11 mean?

The psalmist is crying out in desperation, using the image of God's hand as a symbol of His power and protection. When he asks why God is "drawing back" His hand, he's expressing the painful feeling that God has withdrawn His help during a time of terrible suffering, perhaps during an enemy invasion or national crisis. The plea to take God's hand "from your chest" and act is basically saying, "God, we need you to stop being passive and start defending us." This is raw, honest prayer from someone in real anguish. The psalmist isn't trying to be polite or patient, he's asking God directly: Why aren't you using your power to help us? If you're going through a season where God feels distant or inactive in your struggles, this psalm gives you permission to bring those hard questions to Him. God welcomes honest questions from those who are suffering.
