What does Psalms 51:16 mean?
David is expressing something that cuts to the heart of worship: God cares far more about a transformed heart than about the external rituals we perform for him. He's saying that if God simply wanted sacrifices and religious ceremonies, he'd gladly offer them, but that's not what moves God's heart. What God truly desires is genuine repentance and a sincere desire to be made right. This becomes especially powerful when you remember David wrote this after committing serious sins (adultery and murder). No amount of animal sacrifices could fix what was broken inside him. What he needed, and what he's recognizing God wants from all of us, is authentic remorse and the willingness to change.
