Psalms 51:15
“Lord, open my lips. My mouth shall declare your praise.”
What does Psalms 51:15 mean?
The psalmist (traditionally David) is asking God to literally enable him to speak—to unstop his mouth so he can do what he most wants to do: tell others how good God is. There's a beautiful humility here: he's not assuming he has the words or the courage on his own. He knows that genuine praise comes from God first opening us up, breaking through our silence, shame, or fear. This prayer fits perfectly in Psalm 51, where David is confessing serious sin and experiencing the weight of it. Even in that broken place, he's saying, "When you restore me, the first thing I want to do is speak your goodness aloud." It's a reminder that sometimes we need to actually ask God to help us speak truth, whether that's praise, honesty with others, or a testimony about what he's done.
