What does Psalms 49:11 mean?
This psalm observes something painfully human: we build our lives around the assumption that what we create will last, so we pour ourselves into accumulating possessions and stamping our names on things as though that secures our legacy. The psalmist isn't condemning ambition itself, but rather the illusion that material success or fame can protect us from mortality, the one thing that comes for everyone equally. The deeper truth the psalm keeps circling back to is that death levels all our distinctions and leaves our carefully built estates to strangers. There's both sadness and freedom in recognizing this.
