Psalms 39:5

What does Psalms 39:5 mean?
The psalmist is overwhelmed by how brief human life really is when measured against God's eternity. A "hand width" was a small unit of measurement in ancient times, so he's saying our days slip past in tiny increments, barely adding up to anything significant. When we stand before the infinite God, even a full lifetime feels like a single breath, here and then gone. This isn't meant to make you feel worthless, but rather to shift perspective. In those seasons when we're stressed about small failures or consumed by temporary troubles, this reminds us that our problems are temporary too. The awareness that life is brief can become surprisingly freeing, pointing us toward what actually matters and toward the God who holds eternity in his hands.
