Psalms 28:5
“Because they don’t respect the works of Yahweh, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.”
What does Psalms 28:5 mean?
The psalmist is describing what happens when people ignore or dismiss God's work in the world. Those who refuse to recognize God's hand in creation and in their own lives, who take blessings for granted or credit themselves alone for their good fortune, face a kind of unraveling. God withdraws the sustenance that comes from alignment with him, and without that foundation, things fall apart. This isn't about punishment from an angry God so much as the natural consequence of turning away from the source of life and blessing. When we ignore God's presence and provision, we lose access to the strength and wholeness that comes from acknowledging him. The image of breaking down rather than building up captures how destructive it becomes to live as though God's work doesn't matter.
