What does Psalms 17:9 mean?

The psalmist is pouring out real fear and pain here, naming the specific danger he faces. He's being hunted by people who want him dead, and they're closing in from all sides, leaving him feeling trapped and vulnerable. This kind of raw honesty about being in over your head is actually a gift in the Psalms, because it gives all of us permission to bring our scariest, most desperate moments to God without pretending everything is fine. The point isn't that God always removes such threats instantly, but that he's the one worth crying out to when we're surrounded by forces we can't handle alone.
