What does Psalms 17:8 mean?

The psalmist is asking God for the kind of protection that comes from being deeply loved and treasured. The "apple of your eye" is the pupil, the most sensitive and carefully guarded part of our vision, so this image speaks to being precious and worth protecting at all costs. When someone shields you under their wings, they're offering comfort and safety like a mother bird gathering her young, creating a barrier between you and whatever threatens you. This prayer works especially well when you're feeling vulnerable or afraid, when the world feels too big or too harsh. It's an honest request to matter enough to God that he'll make your safety a priority, and a quiet admission that you can't protect yourself alone.
