“As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.”
What does Psalms 140:9 mean?
The psalmist is asking God to turn the tables on enemies who are plotting against him. Rather than asking for direct punishment, he's praying that their own words and schemes will ultimately be their undoing, that the harm they're trying to create will circle back to them instead. This is an honest prayer from someone under real pressure, speaking the raw feelings of being surrounded and threatened. Many of us know that particular anxiety of feeling like people are working against us. The psalm invites us to release that burden to God instead of taking revenge ourselves, trusting that he sees both what's being said and what's truly in people's hearts.
