What does Psalms 137:2 mean?
This image comes from the exile of the Jewish people in Babylon around 586 BC, when their temple was destroyed and they were forced from their homeland. The willows mark the rivers of Babylon, and hanging up their harps is a haunting gesture of grief, silence, and refusal to make music in a foreign land.
