What does Psalms 124:5 mean?

This verse imagines what would have happened if God hadn't been on Israel's side, using the powerful image of floodwaters to represent overwhelming danger and near-destruction. The "proud waters" are waves so forceful they seem almost arrogant in their power, the kind that sweep away everything in their path. The writer is saying our very soul, our whole selves, would have been drowned and lost. It's a way of acknowledging how close we came to being completely undone, and how grateful we should be for rescue.
