What does Psalms 124:2 mean?

When enemies surrounded the psalmist and his community, their survival came down to one thing: God's active protection and presence. This verse captures that vulnerable moment of acknowledging how easily things could have gone wrong without divine help, which makes gratitude feel both real and necessary rather than abstract. The "if it had not been" structure lets us sit with the danger that was genuinely there, then contrast it with the actual outcome. Whether the threat was military, political, or personal persecution, the writer is saying God's being "on our side" made all the difference between destruction and deliverance. It's the kind of reflection that comes after you've made it through something hard and can finally see how close you came to losing everything.
