What does Psalms 124:1 mean?

When trouble comes, it's natural to wonder what would have happened without God's help. This opening line invites us into a moment of reflection, where the psalmist is calling the whole community to pause and recognize how God has protected them through difficult circumstances. By saying "let Israel now say," the writer is essentially asking people to speak up and acknowledge what they've experienced, almost like bearing witness together. There's something grounding about this honest acknowledgment. Rather than pretending we're self-sufficient or that everything works out on its own, the psalmist creates space for us to name how fragile our situations can be and how dependent we actually are on something greater than ourselves. It's an invitation to gratitude that begins with a simple, truthful question: where would we be without God walking with us?
