Psalms 11:5
βYahweh examines the righteous, but the wicked and him who loves violence his soul hates.β
What does Psalms 11:5 mean?
God's watchful care extends differently depending on who we are and what we do. When God examines the righteous, it's like a loving parent paying close attention to someone trying to walk the right path, noticing their efforts and heart. But the verse makes clear there's a sharp contrast: God fundamentally opposes those who embrace wickedness and violence, and this opposition comes from the very core of who God is (his soul). This isn't about God punishing people for occasional mistakes or struggles. It's about God's nature being set against what destroys people and communities. If you're trying to follow God's way even imperfectly, you're known and cared for by him. If you're actively choosing a path of harm toward others, you're moving away from the God whose heart is for human flourishing and peace.
