What does Psalms 106:8 mean?

God stepped in to rescue his people not because they had earned it through their own goodness, but to protect his own reputation and character. When we're at our worst, sometimes the only thing that moves God to help us is his commitment to being faithful to his own nature and promises. This reminds us that God's mercy isn't a reward we rack up through good behavior, but rather a reflection of who he fundamentally is, and that becomes a testament to his power when he saves people who don't deserve it.
