Psalms 106:40
“Therefore Yahweh burned with anger against his people. He abhorred his inheritance.”
What does Psalms 106:40 mean?
When God's people repeatedly turned away from him and broke their covenant promises, his anger wasn't indifference or distant punishment, but the deep pain of betrayal. A parent who has warned a child many times before consequences come knows something of this anguish, the burning that comes from love being rejected. Even his language of being "abhorred" at what his inheritance had become speaks to grief as much as anger, the sorrow of seeing something precious become corrupted. Yet if you read this psalm in full, you'll notice it doesn't end in abandonment, but rather moves toward restoration and plea for mercy.
