What does Psalms 106:20 mean?
The people of Israel abandoned the God who had revealed himself to them in blazing power and made an idol instead, a carved bull that was nothing but carved stone. This happened while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving God's law, and the people grew impatient waiting for him. The psalmist is pointing out how absurd and tragic it was: they traded away their connection to the living God, the source of everything good in their lives, for something lifeless and silent. It's a reminder of how easily we can turn away from what's real and true when we get restless or scared, reaching for substitutes that promise to fill the emptiness but ultimately leave us empty.
