What does Psalms 102:9 mean?

This is the cry of someone in deep sorrow, using the physical language of grief to express unbearable pain. Eating ashes and drinking tears are ways of describing how suffering has become so all-consuming that it's woven into the basic acts of nourishment and sustenance. Instead of finding comfort in food and drink, the psalmist finds only bitterness and loss. Many people in dark seasons recognize this feeling, when everything tastes like despair and even the simplest parts of life feel heavy with sadness. The honesty of this verse gives permission to name our grief without minimizing it, and it reminds us that God listens to those who bring their raw pain to prayer.
