Psalms 102:6
“I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places.”
What does Psalms 102:6 mean?
The psalmist is describing deep loneliness and isolation, comparing himself to birds that live in desolate, uninhabited places. In ancient times, pelicans and owls of the wilderness were seen as solitary creatures, far removed from human community and comfort. By using these images, the writer is saying: I feel abandoned, cut off, dwelling in emptiness where I don't belong. This comparison captures something real about suffering that many of us recognize, that sense of being utterly alone even when surrounded by others. The psalm goes on to describe someone in genuine pain reaching out to God, which is exactly where the psalmist's heart is heading, too.
