What does Proverbs 27:21 mean?

Just as intense heat purifies precious metals by burning away impurities, our character gets tested and shaped by how we respond to praise and recognition. When people honor us or build us up, that moment reveals who we really are: Do we grow proud and lose perspective, or do we stay humble and grounded? The proverb suggests that praise is actually one of life's most revealing tests, perhaps even more powerful than criticism. How we handle being lifted up tells us (and others) far more about our true nature than we might expect.
