What does Proverbs 27:17 mean?

When two pieces of iron rub together, they both become sharper and more useful. In the same way, our friendships work best when we're genuinely present with each other, honest, and willing to challenge and encourage one another. A real friend helps us see ourselves more clearly and become better versions of ourselves, not by being harsh, but by caring enough to be truthful. This is especially powerful during difficult seasons, when a faithful friend's presence and perspective can help us find our way through.
