What does Proverbs 25:22 mean?

When you respond to someone's cruelty or hostility with unexpected kindness instead of revenge, something shifts in them. The "coals of fire" is an ancient way of describing the burning shame or conviction that comes when someone realizes they've been met with goodness they didn't deserve. It's not about hurting them, but about creating the conditions where their conscience might finally wake up. The verse promises that choosing kindness in hard moments isn't a loss for you, either. God notices when you take the harder path, when you refuse to match someone's worst behavior with your own. That faithfulness matters, and it changes something in you too, even if it doesn't immediately change them.
