Proverbs 18:12
“Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility.”
What does Proverbs 18:12 mean?
Pride often blinds us to our own weaknesses, making us vulnerable to failure we didn't see coming. This proverb is telling us that destructive consequences frequently arrive on the heels of arrogance, while genuine respect and advancement come to those who stay humble enough to learn and adjust course. It's not saying that humble people never face hard times, but rather that pride itself becomes a trap that sets us up for ruin. When we can admit what we don't know and stay open to correction, we're in a much stronger position. The verse invites us to notice which path we're walking down: is our confidence closing us off, or is our humility keeping us teachable?
