What does Proverbs 17:19 mean?

When we nurture a love for doing things our own way, we're actually inviting conflict into our lives. Stubbornness and disobedience create friction with others and with God's natural order, the way a stone thrown into still water inevitably causes ripples. The second part uses vivid ancient imagery: building an unusually high gate around your house might seem like protection, but it actually signals pride and isolation. It suggests someone putting themselves above others or trying so hard to keep the world out that they cut themselves off from community and help. In practical terms, this is about how our attempts to control everything and elevate ourselves often backfire, leaving us more vulnerable and alone than we started.
