What does Proverbs 17:18 mean?

Making a promise to guarantee someone else's debt is a serious financial commitment, and this verse is cautioning against doing it carelessly or without thinking it through. When you "strike hands" on such an agreement, you're putting your own livelihood at risk for someone else's obligations. The warning isn't against helping others, but against making binding financial promises on impulse or without understanding the real consequences. A person who does this without careful consideration is acting foolishly and may find themselves in devastating circumstances when the debt comes due and they're held responsible.
