Philippians 1:7
“It is even right for me to think this way on behalf of all of you, because I have you in my heart, because, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation of the Good News, you all are partakers with me of grace.”
What does Philippians 1:7 mean?
Paul is writing from prison, and even in that difficult situation, he's thinking of the people he loves and ministered to. He's saying it's natural and right for him to hold them close in his thoughts and prayers, because they've become partners with him in sharing God's grace through faith. Whether he's facing legal troubles or standing up for what he believes, they're part of that journey together. What makes this so tender is that Paul isn't thinking about his own suffering in isolation. His bonds (his imprisonment), his legal defense, his work spreading the Gospel, his hardships, and his hopes, are all things he experiences alongside these people spiritually. They share in God's grace together, which means they're connected in something much deeper than circumstances or proximity. Even separated by distance, even while he's suffering, Paul feels their presence in his heart because they're united in faith.
