Numbers 35:6
““The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the man slayer to flee to. Besides them you shall give forty-two cities.”
What does Numbers 35:6 mean?
The Levites were Israel's priestly tribe who didn't receive their own territory like the other tribes, so God commanded that they be given 48 cities scattered throughout the land instead. Six of these cities held special significance as places of refuge where someone who had accidentally killed another person could go to be safe from revenge. This protected people from being executed for unintentional harm while still maintaining justice, since they would face fair judgment rather than mob retaliation. The other 42 cities were regular Levite settlements where priests and their support staff could live and serve their communities spiritually.
