What does Numbers 3:49 mean?

When the Israelites were counted, there were more firstborn sons than there were Levites to dedicate to God's service in the tabernacle. So instead of requiring additional families to give up their firstborn, Moses collected a redemption payment from the families whose sons weren't matched with a Levite substitute. This practical solution honored God's claim on the firstborn while allowing families to keep their sons and contribute financially to the tabernacle instead. It shows how God's requirements could be met in ways that worked within the community's actual circumstances.
