What does Numbers 3:48 mean?
When the Israelites were being counted for service in God's tabernacle, the firstborn sons were originally set apart as God's. But God made a provision: families could "redeem" their sons by paying a small fee instead. This verse says that the money collected from those redemptions should go to Aaron and his sons, the priests. This arrangement meant the priests had a practical source of support for their temple work, since they didn't own land like other tribes did. It's one of several ways God's instructions ensured the spiritual leaders had what they needed to serve the community. The system turned something sacred (the dedication of firstborn sons) into a way of caring for those who tended to Israel's relationship with God.
