Numbers 18:7
“You and your sons with you shall keep your priesthood for everything of the altar, and for that within the veil. You shall serve. I give you the service of the priesthood as a gift. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.””
What does Numbers 18:7 mean?
God is establishing the sacred responsibility of the priesthood—Aaron and his sons would care for the altar and the most holy space of the temple (behind the veil, where only priests could go). This was serious work, treated as a privileged calling rather than a burden. The warning about strangers approaching these sacred spaces reflects how ancient Israel understood holiness as real and dangerous—not out of cruelty, but because they believed approaching God's presence without proper preparation could harm someone spiritually. For us today, this speaks to the value of dedicated, reverent service to God, and the idea that some things deserve our full attention and respect rather than casual handling.
