What does Numbers 14:23 mean?

God is drawing a firm line here after the Israelites have rejected His promise to bring them into Canaan. Despite all the miraculous signs they'd witnessed in Egypt and the wilderness, they chose to believe the fearful report of the spies over God's word, and that refusal to trust had consequences they couldn't escape. This wasn't an arbitrary punishment, but a natural result of their own rejection: those who had repeatedly despised God's character and guidance would not enter the land He had promised their ancestors. The sadness in these words reflects how their own choices locked them out of what could have been theirs, a reminder that what we do with God's promises actually matters.
