Nehemiah 9:36
““Behold, we are servants today, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, behold, we are servants in it.”
What does Nehemiah 9:36 mean?
The people of Judah are acknowledging a painful reality: despite God's ancient promise to give them the land as their own inheritance, they now live as servants within it. They're under Persian rule, paying taxes to a foreign king, unable to fully enjoy or control the very land their ancestors received from God. This honest confession comes during a moment of national prayer and repentance, when they're remembering all God has done for them while also facing their present bondage.
