Nehemiah 9:35
“For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land which you gave before them. They did not turn from their wicked works.”
What does Nehemiah 9:35 mean?
The Israelites are confessing a hard truth to God: even after receiving everything—a kingdom, abundance, and fertile land—they still refused to turn away from doing wrong. It's a recognition that having good things doesn't automatically make us good people, and that material blessing without a change of heart leaves us spiritually empty. This confession comes during a moment of national reflection, when the people are acknowledging the gap between God's generosity and their own failure to respond with obedience and gratitude. Sometimes we need to name that gap honestly, just as they did here, so we can move toward real repentance rather than just going through the motions.
