Nehemiah 5:18
“Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep. Also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine. Yet for all this, I didn’t demand the governor’s pay, because the bondage was heavy on this people.”
What does Nehemiah 5:18 mean?
Nehemiah was the governor rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, and he had the right to be supported generously by the people through taxes. Instead, he deliberately kept his household expenses modest and refused to take his official governor's salary, even though he could have demanded it. He did this during a time when the people were struggling under heavy debt and hardship, recognizing that taking what was owed to him would have added to their burden. His choice reflects a leader willing to sacrifice his own comfort for the wellbeing of those he served, showing that true authority sometimes means restraint rather than claiming every right we have.
